PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE MALTA MEDICINES AUTHORITY

Monkeypox

An interactive seminar on monkeypox, targeting healthcare professionals, was successfully developed and held on Monday evening in response to evolving contexts. The event was spearheaded by the Academy for Patient Centred Excellence and Innovation in Regulatory Sciences, under the auspices of the Malta Medicines Authority. An opening address was delivered by Honorable Jo Etienne Abela, Minister for Active Aging, responsible for the Malta Medicines Authority. Professor Anthony Serracino-Inglott, Chairman of the Malta Medicines Authority, moderated the session. Professor Charmaine Gauci, Superintendent of Public Health, Dr Chris Barbara, Clinical Chairperson of the Pathology Department at Mater Dei Hospital, Dr Charles Mallia Azzopardi, Head of the Infectious Disease Unit at Mater Dei Hospital and Professor Michael Borg, Head of Infection Control and Sterile Services at Mater Dei Hospital, participated actively as speakers. Their contribution presented an opportunity for attending healthcare professionals to consider key aspects about the monkeypox infection, including epidemiology, case notification and surveillance, laboratory diagnosis, clinical diagnosis, management, transmissibility, and prevention. The interactive discussion along with the networking session held towards the end of the seminar served as an opportunity to stimulate interdisciplinary cooperation, dialogue and engagement for informed decision making and implementation of response plans in relation to the disease outbreak. This seminar is a prime example of how the academic platform within the Malta Medicines Authority is leading educational endeavours and establishing national, European and international collaborations amongst healthcare professionals to share ideas, discuss opportunities and overcome challenges through collaborative reasoning.

B’reazzjoni għal każijiet ta’ ġidri tax-xadini li ġew irreġistrati fl-Ewropa u saħansitra f’Malta tul dawn l-aħħar jiem, nhar it-Tnejn filgħaxija, l-Akkademja għall-Eċċellenza u l-Innovazzjoni fix-Xjenza Regolatorja fi ħdan l-Awtorità dwar il-Mediċini organiżżat b’suċċess seminar interattiv immirat għall-professjonisti tal-kura tas-saħħa dwar il-ġidri tax-xadini. Is-seminar ġie ndirizzat mill- Onorevoli Jo Etienne Abela, Ministru għall-Anzjanità Attiva u responsabbli mill-Awtorità Maltija dwar il-Mediċini. Il-Professur Anthony Serracino-Inglott, Chairman tal-Awtorità Maltija dwar il-Mediċini, mexxa s-sessjoni. Il-Professur Charmaine Gauci, Supretendent tas-Saħħa Pubblika, Dr Chris Barbara, Chairperson Kliniku tad-Dipartiment tal-Patoloġija fl-Isptar Mater Dei, Dr Charles Mallia Azzopardi, Kap tat-Taqsima għall-Mard Infettiv fl-Isptar Mater Dei u l-Professur Michael Borg, Kap tad-Diprtiment tal-Prevenzjoni tal-Infezzjonijiet fl-Isptar Mater Dei, ipparteċipaw b’mod attiv bħala kelliema. Il-kontribut tagħhom serva ta’ opportunità għall-professjonisti tal-kura tas-saħħa li attendew biex jaġġornaw ruħhom fuq aspetti ewlenin rigward l-infezzjoni tal-ġidri tax-xadini, inkluż l-epidemjoloġija, notifika u sorveljanza tal-każi, djanjożi tal-laboratorju, djanjożi klinika, immaniġġjar, trażmissjoni u prevenzjoni. Id-diskussjoni nterattiva flimkien mas-sessjoni ta’ netwerking li saru lejn tmiem is-seminar servew ta’ opportunità għal kooperazzjoni, djalogu kif ukoll impenn bejn il-professjonisti tas-saħħa preżenti għal teħid ta’ deċiżjonijiet infurmati kif ukoll implimentazzjoni ta’ pjanijiet ta’ rispons fir-rigward tat-tifqigħa tal-marda. Dan is-seminar huwa eżempju ewlieni ta’ kif il-pjattaforma akkademika fi ħdan l-Awtorità Maltija tal-Mediċini qed taħdem u tistabbilixxi kollaborazzjonijiet nazzjonali, Ewropej u internazzjonali ma’ professjonisti tal-kura tas-saħħa biex jaqsmu ideat, jiddiskutu opportunitajiet u jegħlbu sfidi permezz ta’ raġunament kollaborattiv.
